when creativity goes wrong

we decided to create some kind of inverted overhead projector – we call it the under(xxxx)head projector.

A mirror on the rooftop reflects the light onto a second reflective surface that will create some kind of pattern by vibrating. There will also be another more controllable pattern inserted into the beam. A lens at the end will spread the light out onto a bigger surface. 4 sensors that border the area under the light will count how many people are in that area. This will make the controllable pattern react.

Here are some sketches on how a lightpole could look like by using a big lens and some reflective surfaces.

Adding interest through light

As the Louis Armstrong song goes:
“Life can be so sweet,
On the sunny side of the street”

From observation, streets or areas that lie in shadow are not as popular as their counterparts in the sun. Below is a photo of a cafe in Copenhagen which shows a clear divide between the tables tucked under the shadow of the building and those in the sunlight. This is echoed on the streets as well, where one side of the street that is in shadow can find itself with less pedestrian traffic than the other side. Why? Perhaps it’s the warmth of the sun, an increased energy because of the light, more vivid colours, or maybe because the alternative is continuous shadowy stretch that can be dull and cold in contrast. A potential solution could be to use the already existing lamp posts which illuminate the street at night and retrofit it with a reflection “chandelier” of sorts which would disperse and reflect light focused onto it across the sidewalk and street.

Streets and especially open squares and plazas can be places of void with little shape or environment. These vast areas of brick or concrete, often dull grey in composition, lack any sort of visual stimulation that guides or piques interest in those passing through. Like the white flowers which light up and give spark to the otherwise solid green grass area, a different type of “flower” could be implemented that give colour and interest to the concrete. These small extruded objects could work a number of ways. First of all, they could reflect available light and even give hue to it through internal refraction. Secondly, at night they could light up by means of an LED, perhaps even changing colour. Third and finally, they could be interactive with those walking over top. If someone steps on one, perhaps it glows brighter or pulses, maybe even affecting the other “flowers” in the immediate area.

Light can be reflected and coloured quite easily—here a CD is used to cast a spectrum of light.

1. A person walks beside this screen “wall” where on one side the person is filmed and then projected on the other side like a cartoon character. The wall collects information about how fast etc. people are walking by and by night the wall would play all the recorded data randomly, together with all the others and create “art”. Another option could be that the other side (cartoon side) could be projected on the streets and not directly on the wall…

2. A “tunnel” where people walk through (if they want). Depending on the speed, height, clothes etc. the top roof will create some funky grafitti. At night, not only would this look lovely, but it will keep playing all the recorded data randomly, in different colors and create art.

3. Visualizer of noise in the city, just like a visualizer in a mediaplayer. Noise will be recorded through out the day and at night a screen would light up and the spectrums would start “jumping” all around the screen.

4. Tiles that record footsteps which light up right after you’ve walked over them. At night these would light up, start “walking”, move randomly and create art.

1. This is an idea for a shape of the walking sensors showed on people’s heads so they would see the light moving while they walk by, just if looking up.That could b solar pannels on the top and it would give a nice shade douring the day.

2. This is based on the idea of the ”net”of leds but it a tunnel experience the people would walk into…and by stepping on a platform underneath it, vibrations of people walking would give the power for the lights.

3.

A tree that interacts with people walking by, some of it made with metal pannels that reflect light a capture it as energy…during the day the pannels on the tree would move like leaves on trees and maybe that could give the energy?

4. A walking expereince through these lighting up structures.

5. The rotating elements I’ve made them looking back at Daniel thought with the rotating leds and a thought of a more organic shape maybe made of different levels of tablets wich each has leds integraed into it.It’s a bit complex but it has some potetial still I think.

6.And last but not least I came up with a white, pure and beautifully poetic shape of a cloud, wich inside has a structure of leds and outside a spreading light material wich could be vey light and seethrough during the day and give light during the night. In the day it could actually function as a real cloud wich gives shade and a place to escape from the rain…

bit shed light synthesizer

The idea is to have a Party Shed with a freestyle jam Arduino sequncing synthesizer. The synthesizer is inside the shed and linked up to different light sources around the shed.

Lights are:
A panel in front of the shed witchs is linked directly to the sound scale of the synth.

The shed get more active and blinks from peoples activity around it, and should be linked to the lower frequencies of the synth. Then I would love some moving light chains moved by small motors from an analysis of the music! wow!

I’ts all powered by a giant windmill on top of the shed.

Then we can have a cosy bit party in the mittle of the street :0)
