Playing with mirrors placed in different angles instead of using too many light sources would be an idea for less consuming energy.

City rhythm by alexbuss

A departure point idea which looks to convey the rhythm of the city; the pulse and beat of the street. As sketched below, one example would be to have a series of sensors on the road which measure when cars cross a certain point in the road and relay this information to an installation of lights on the sidewalk.

Obviously this is the beginning of an idea still open to interpretation and discussion, however one setup could see a series of vertical bars that are related to one set of sensors on the road. As cars pass over the series of sensors they could light each respective bar to the top and then gradually fall back to nothing, alluding to an idea of a graphic equalizer found in audio equipment and stereos.

Bringing research up to speed by alexbuss

A digest of some research that I’ve done that isn’t a lot of new material per se, but rather was gathered by looking back at some of our ideas from the past few days and identifying what is already available.

One of our main ideas from our research in Copenhagen had to do with seating in a public setting. Philips has done some work in this area already with plastic benches with embedded LEDs that react to how long a person is sitting on the bench: http://www.interactivearchitecture.org/rca-philips-glowing-places.html

With regards to interactive walls and “graffiti” there is a lot of work and exploration in this area (with as many videos on YouTube) including work by Adobe, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZCF7JVEFDs; Lenovo, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ltp9nKKzsA&NR=1; many university and research projects; and again, Philips http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/02/paint-led-art-f.html. Philips’ work was installed in a childrens hospital and essentially allowed the kids to draw in a large scale on the wall using light.

For a list of other light related projects by Philips—there are more than a handful on their website:

In addition to the videos about “light graffiti” that were shown in class last week, here is a video that by a Japanase group, however this one shows and gives some info about how it is done and the production that goes into creating such a spectacle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAhsTUUs6W4

graffiti tunnel by danielronge

A wall that reacts to people walking by with a graffiti tag. Graffiti artists provide different styles of tags that are chosen by the system concerning to the persons speed, height, etc. One tag is written over the other, and vanishes after some time. It reacts to peoples movements without their intention, but can also be “abused” by people playing with it for fun.

this idea is based on thermo-bi-metal, which changes it’s form when exposed to heat, like in this lamp:

so why not use this as umbrellas that extend like flowers in the sun. This could either work directly through the heat of the sun, or indirectly through solar panels that put a current to the metal sheets.

we saw the cable supportet street lights that were all connected to a pole in the middle … why not light up this pole? And also the cables … they are already “conected” to power!

light steps by danielronge

the space around people sitting on the steps illuminates. The color indicates how long they have been sitting there. The light remains for a while after someone left, like a footprint. Idealy this would be powered by the peoples body heat. The whole system would visualize the traffic at a spot like this.
